Si, Para Usted: The Funky Sounds of Revolutionary Cuba Vol. 1 is an amazing compilation of music. It is likely that many of the tracks/artists appearing on the compilation would never have been heard otherwise if it weren’t for Waxing Deep’s radio host Dan Zacks. During the middle years of Fidel Castro’s reign in Cuba, musicians were given the freedom to create music without punishment/banishment/whatever you want to call it. The outcome is an amazing blend of soul, funk, jazz fusion and experimentations with psychedelic and electronic sounds. An interesting aspect to point is that the music found on Si, Para Usted has been remastered and rerecorded from the original vinyl copies the tunes are taken from. Cuban vinyl is generally poor in quality, that isn’t heard in the compilation. There are many interesting tunes including those by Grupo Irakere and Grupo Monumental.

Si, Para Usted Vol. 2 should be out sometime early in 2009. And it will contain more cover art/design by Minneapolis-based Burlesque design crew.
More at Waxing Deep.
